Ending the Almajiri System in Nigeria

26.00

In northern Nigeria, many young boys are given over by impoverished parents to Islamic centers and mosques. This is called the Almajrii system - it provides an education only in the Koran.

The boys are forced to live in squalid conditions, and they’re sent with bowls to beg for food in the streets. They are often beaten by their masters, and sold for day work as slaves or prostitutes.

Studies indicate 80% of Boko Haram members were formerly Almajiri. They are unemployable - due to learning no skills - except for training in crime and Islamic radicalism.

BBI’s advisor in Nigeria - Mubarak Bala - is a leading Nigerian spokesperson for ending the Almajiri system.
